Iran is facing one of the Middle East 's deadliest outbreaks, with more than 16,000 deaths.

TEHRAN: On Tuesday Iran announced 235 new deaths from the novel coronavirus, a historic toll for a single day in the hardest-hit nation in the Middle East.

"We have lost 235 of our compatriots in the past 24 hours because of COVID-19," Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the health ministry, said taking the overall toll to 16,147.
